Week of October 19, 214

Welcome to another Week in Mr. Joe's Class!

Last week we had a great time learning about all different things. The students created magnificent non-fiction information text about an animal of their choosing. These turned out great and I am starting to put them up in the class so you can view them for parent night. The students have also been learning about the changing Earth in that of volcanoes. Student have learned what they are, how they are formed, but most importantly they got to create their own volcanoes as a table group. In math the students are continuing to review and learn new concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We are working extremely hard in learning about math compensation which I will put a link to review below. The boys are continuing to do an amazing job!

For the last few weeks we have been learning about non fiction text features. In a previous post you can view the powerpoint on this site about the text features. After learning about these text features the students have ow created their own Non fiction Information book about an animal of their choosing. These booklets can be found displayed in Mr. Joe's classroom for you to come in to take a look at.

This week we are starting a new Non-Fiction text called Antarctica: Land of the Penguins. This is a Non-Fiction book that tells us about Antarctica, We learn about its climate, glaciers, icebergs, how the Continent becomes larger and smaller due to the weather changes, and most of all penguins. It is a great information text that can give the students visuals of something they may not have seen before.

Below is a link to the Powerpoint with the story included:

Math

In math we are reviewing different ways to add and subtract numbers. Two such focuses are doing addition and subtraction with compensation as well as the horizontal method. At the end of this week the students will have an assessment test that will show us what they have learned so far this year with the topics covered. Please make sure they have reviewed on this site all of the different math topics we have covered so far.

Science

Last week we talked about what volcanoes are and how they are formed. We even got to make volcanoes in which you will see in the pictures and videos below. The boys learned about how plate tectonics work and shift to form volcanoes, and how magma and lava are created and burst through. The boys had a great time with unit, and loved to use the scientific method for their science inquiry.

This week the boys are learning about the greenhouse effect and how it effects the planet we live on. This links to our Antarctica story because if too many greenhouse gasses are created, the temperature of the Earth will increase thus melting our polar icecaps. In a few days I will post some more information on how the boys are understanding this.
